How to Cook a Whole Lobster at Home

Introduction

Cooking a whole lobster at home can seem daunting, but with a little preparation it can be surprisingly straightforward. Fresh Welsh lobster needs very little added to it — simple cooking and good-quality accompaniments allow its naturally sweet, delicate flavour to shine.

At Tenby Lobster Co., our live Welsh lobsters are carefully selected and packed in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, ready for you to prepare and enjoy at home.

Before You Cook Your Lobster

Keep your lobster cool and refrigerated until you are ready to prepare it. Do not place a live lobster in fresh water or leave it submerged in water.

Before cooking, the lobster should be humanely stunned and killed. Chilling can reduce activity, but should not be relied upon as the method of killing.

How to Boil a Whole Lobster

Choose a pan large enough to comfortably accommodate the lobster and fill it with enough water to cover it.

Bring the water to a rolling boil and season generously with sea salt. Once the lobster has been humanely prepared, carefully place it into the boiling water.

Return the water to the boil and cook until the lobster is completely cooked through. Cooking time will depend on the size and weight of the lobster, so always ensure it is thoroughly cooked before serving.

Once cooked, carefully remove the lobster and allow it to rest briefly before serving.

Oven-Baked Lobster with Garlic Butter

For something a little more indulgent, lobster is wonderful finished in the oven with garlic butter.

Preheat your oven to 200°C / 180°C fan. Once the lobster has been humanely prepared, arrange it on a baking tray and add garlic butter, lemon and your preferred seasoning.

Cook until the lobster meat is completely cooked through, then allow it to rest briefly before serving.

What to Serve with Lobster

Lobster doesn't need complicated accompaniments. Try serving it with melted garlic butter, fresh lemon, crusty bread, new potatoes or a crisp green salad.

For a special occasion, pair your lobster with a chilled Champagne, Chardonnay or other crisp white wine.
